WYK Back in Action after Super Typhoon Ragasa

On 26 Sep, our warm-hearted young gentlemen returned to campus to give a hand on clearing debris after Super Typhoon Ragasa lashed Hong Kong and toppled some of our oldest trees on campus. With the concerted effort by our campus management team and our fine young Wahyanites, WYK is quickly getting back in shape!

Indeed, we received numerous inquiries over the past few days regarding the damage caused by Typhoon Ragasa. Thank you for your heartfelt concern for our cherished campus.

Several trees – some dating back to the 1950s like the Lophostemon confertus, commonly known as the Brisbane Box (紅膠木) – unfortunately, either had A BAD HAIR CUT or FALLEN, and we have also experienced broken glass and damage to our sports facilities.

Nurturing a tree is as delicate and resource-intensive as guiding teenagers; it requires patience and dedication. The companionship and kindness these trees offer are truly invaluable. While we cherish each tree on campus, maintaining our approximately 250 trees presents a significant challenge. The school spends over a million dollars annually on gardening and tree maintenance. Caring for trees of this size and age typically costs between $15,000 and $20,000 per year, not including unexpected emergencies like the recent typhoon.

All these expenses are supported by the Fr. Kelly Educational Fund for our tree maintenance/ hardware program. It helps us cultivate a beautiful campus, one that embraces everyone in its green and peaceful surroundings.
