Mitsubishi Electric Eco Tech Cup 2025

A joint venture between the STEM Teams of Wah Yan College, Kowloon and Heep Yunn School, the innovative “Algae Window” captured the title of Champion (Student Division) in the Mitsubishi Electric Eco Tech Cup 2025.

Striking a fine balance between functionality and aesthetics, the “Algae Window” is an innovative architectural design tailored for Hong Kong’s high-density commercial buildings.   The algae absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen through photosynthesis, by adjusting the concentration of algae, sunlight penetration could also be regulated – with this, heat buildup from direct sunlight could be mitigated, energy consumption reduced, air quality improved, eventually fostering greener and more sustainable urban spaces.  This system creatively turns surplus algae into a useful resource while supporting renewable energy production, contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Our younger generation’s commitment to harnessing science, technology and creativity for a greener future is truly commendable.

The Mitsubishi Electric Eco Tech Cup 2025 was jointly organized by the Faculty of Engineering and Centre for Innovation and Technology of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
