Assembly Sharing by Recent Graduate on Active Engagement in Learning

“Interest is your best teacher.  Be hungry for knowledge.”

Returning home from the University of Cambridge bearing first-class honours with distinction in computer science, HY CHEUNG (Class of 2023) stood before his younger brothers at the assembly to share his intellectual adventure, advocating for active engagement in learning.

A former technology captain of the WYK STEM team, CHEUNG stressed that “interest is your best teacher”.  Recalling how he engineered robotic designs from humble origins with discarded cardboards before mastering laser-cutting software, CHEUNG illustrated that genuine learning is a long and winding road paved with failures, reflection, and the courage to fail again.  True mastery, he suggested, is not born of rote learning but of interest, curiosity, and self-directedness.

Along his pursuit of academic excellence, he never forgets to give and to serve – living out the Jesuit maxim of being a “man for and with others”.  He co-created the WYK Online Judge platform – built outside the curriculum with his buddy in the STEM team, this platform serves as a guiding light for his younger brothers training for the Olympiad in Informatics. By transforming personal expertise into a shared vessel of opportunity, CHEUNG demonstrated that academic excellence finds its highest fulfillment when offered as a generous service.

Lastly, CHEUNG left his audience with a guiding conviction: “Knowledge alone doesn’t drive you far.  Unless you are a good learner” – calling for his younger brothers to cast aside passive instructions, take action and start creating with a warm heart to make meaningful changes both for personal growth, and the betterment of the community.
